Black Velvet Jewellery Displays: When They Work and When They Don't

Against black, white gold and silver gain contrast and diamonds pick up edge light. It is the default for a reason.

Black also eats dark stones

Onyx, black spinel, dark sapphire and oxidised silver vanish. Keep a light grey or off-white set for those lines.

Velvet shows every fingerprint and hair

It is the most beautiful and the least forgiving surface in a shop. Budget for a lint roller at the counter and expect to replace sooner than microfiber.

Pile direction changes the colour

Brush velvet one way and it reads charcoal, the other way near-black. Set all your trays running the same direction or the case looks patchy.

Microfiber is the practical cousin

It gives most of the depth of velvet, resists marking better and costs less. For high-traffic counters it is usually the right call.

Never mix velvet and leatherette in one case

The sheen difference is obvious and makes the cheaper one look cheap. Pick a finish family per case.

Black plus warm light equals brown

Halogen or warm LED pulls black towards brown. If your lighting is warm, look at charcoal rather than pure black.

Keep a spare set boxed

Velvet fades in daylight. A boxed spare set means a window display can be refreshed without reordering.
