Great jewellery photos sell jewellery — and the difference between a flat, forgettable shot and a scroll-stopping one is usually the prop underneath the piece. 1. Give the piece something to stand on
Jewellery lying flat catches no light and shows no shape. A ring seat or display block lifts the piece a few centimetres, lets the stone face the lens, and creates a natural shadow that adds depth. For necklaces, a bust shows the true hanging drape that a flatlay can never capture.
2. Matte beats shiny — every time
Glossy acrylic props bounce light straight back into your lens and create hot spots. Microfiber, velvet and matte-finish props absorb stray light, so your metal and stones become the brightest thing in frame. This is why professional product shots so often use grey or beige microfiber seats: the texture reads as "premium" without competing with the jewellery.
3. Pick a two-colour palette and stay in it
Grey prop + white background. Beige prop + cream background. Black prop + charcoal background for dramatic gold shots. When every photo in your shop shares one palette, your Etsy page or Instagram grid instantly looks like a brand instead of a collection of random photos.
4. Scale matters more than you think
A tiny stud earring on a tall necklace bust looks lost. Match prop size to the piece: small seats and mini stands for rings and studs, medium T-bars for drop earrings, full busts only for necklaces. If you shoot many categories, a matching display family in one material covers everything while keeping the look consistent.
5. Props that earn their keep twice
