Lighting a Jewellery Case: What to Fix Before Buying New Displays

Before replacing trays, check whether the case is simply under-lit. New displays will not rescue bad light.
Cool white for diamonds and silver
Around 4000-5000K keeps white metal white and gives stones their edge sparkle.
Warm light for gold and pearls
Warmer light flatters yellow gold and pearls but pushes silver towards grey. Split your cases if you carry both heavily.
Point light at the stone, not the tray
Light hitting the lining creates glare and washes out contrast. Aim slightly forward and down onto the piece.
Beware heat
Older spot lamps cook leather straps and warp acrylic. LED removes the problem.
Dark lining plus strong light equals drama
The combination that makes shop windows work also works inside a case.
Check for shadows from risers
A tall riser can throw the row in front into shade. Move it back or lower it.
Clean the glass more often than you think
Dirty case glass costs more sparkle than any display choice.
