Necklace and Pendant Boxes: How to Choose the Right Box
Teilen
A necklace box has one job a ring box never has: it must hold a chain still. Get the size or insert wrong and the chain slides, knots in transit or hangs out of the lid. This guide works through the three box types jewellers buy for necklaces, with real sizes, materials, colours and minimum quantities from our necklace and pendant boxes.
Three box types, three different jobs
- Pendant box — a near-square case, typically 7 to 10 cm across. The pendant sits on a pad in the centre and the chain is tucked behind or under it. Examples: the velvet pendant box at 7.2×8.2×4.4 cm and the PU leather octagonal pendant box at 10×10×4.5 cm.
- Long chain box (often called a necklace box) — a slim rectangle, 21 to 24 cm long and about 5.5 to 6 cm wide, where the chain lies along the length. Example: the PU leather long chain box at 23.5×5.7×4 cm.
- Set box — a large square, roughly 18.5 to 19.5 cm, for a necklace laid in a full curve with matching earrings or a ring. Example: the suede large necklace box at 19.5×19.5×3.5 cm.
Chain length versus box width
Measure the chain, not the pendant. A pendant on a fine 40 to 45 cm chain is a pendant-box sale: the pendant is the hero and the chain coils out of sight. Once a chain is heavier, longer or sold without a pendant, the long chain box earns its place, because the chain lies doubled along a 22 to 24 cm length instead of being wound into a 7 cm square where links rub. Allow for the lining: a chain folded in half should come in comfortably under the stated length. Opera-length or chunky curb chains are safer in a set box (19.5×19.5 cm) laid in a full curve.
Depth gets forgotten. Long chain boxes in our range run from 2.5 cm deep (black necklace case) to 4 cm (suede long chain box, 23.5×6×4 cm). A flat snake chain is fine at 2.5 cm; a chain with a stone pendant that stands proud of the pad needs the 4 cm box so the lid does not press on the setting.
Pendant hooks versus slotted pads
Open the box and look at how the pendant is held. A slotted pad grips the bail in a cut in the foam, keeps the pendant centred and takes seconds to load; it suits lighter pendants and busy counters. A hook or bar inside the lid hangs the chain so the pendant drops into view when the box opens, which shows the piece better but needs the chain clipped at the right length and is slower to pack. Either way, check it against your own bails: a slot cut for a slim bail will not take a thick enhancer bail, and the pendant will sit crooked.
Keeping a chain from tangling in the box
- Fasten the clasp before boxing. An open chain finds its own way into a knot.
- In a pendant box, lay the chain in a single loop under the pad, not a figure of eight.
- In a long chain box, run the chain lengthways with the clasp at one end. Never fold it twice to fit; move up a size.
- For drawer stock, choose the shallower box. A chain cannot travel far in a 2.5 cm case.
On the counter, see our guide to stopping the tangle problem on busts and stands.
Matching ring and pendant boxes across a range
Customers notice when a ring box and the pendant box beside it come from different families. Most of our ranges are built as a family in one lining and colour set:
- Proposal box range: ring 6.3×6.2×5.7 cm, pendant 8.5×7.4×4.7 cm, necklace 23.5×5.6×3.9 cm, in grass green, pink, bright red, dark green and dark blue.
- Velvet engagement range: ring 6.2×6.2×5.8 cm, pendant 7.2×8.2×4.4 cm, necklace 23.2×5.6×3.7 cm, in red, orange-red, dark green and dark blue.
- PU leather wedding range: ring 6.4×6.4×6.2 cm, pendant 7.3×8.3×5 cm, long chain 23.5×5.7×4 cm, set box 19.5×19.5×5.6 cm, in white, black, blue and red.

Pick one family per price tier and buy every shape from it. The velvet and suede ring boxes collection lists the ring-box end of most of these families.

Velvet, suede, PU leather or microfibre
- Velvet has the deepest colour and the softest look, which is why the velvet engagement range is the usual choice for red and dark green proposal-style packaging. It marks if handled with greasy fingers, so keep it for the box that goes home with the customer rather than for stock drawers.
- Suede is matte and flatter in tone; the premium suede range in black, dark green, dark blue and carmine does not throw highlights in photographs.
- PU leather wipes clean and takes a white finish that fabric cannot, as on the high-end PU white range (pendant 9×9×4.8 cm, large necklace box 19.5×19.5×3.5 cm).
- Microfibre sits between suede and PU: a fine, even surface that resists marks better than velvet. The microfibre range comes in beige and black, with a long chain box at 22.5×6×3 cm.

What to order first
Boxes are sold from 10 pieces per style, so a test order is small. A sensible first order is 10 pendant boxes and 10 long chain boxes from the same family, in the colour you expect to use most. The lower-priced ranges (from HK$6.9) are the cheapest way to confirm sizes against your stock before committing to a velvet or PU family, which start at around HK$30 per box. If you want to see the finish of a presentation box first, the magnetic PU box and the lockable octagonal box are available from a single piece.
When the test pack works, order the full family together. Our guide on how much packaging stock to keep covers reorder timing, and orders ship worldwide with tracking.
