Ring Box Sizes: A Jeweller's Guide to Single, Pair and Proposal Boxes

A ring box is the simplest packaging a jeweller buys and the one most often bought wrong: the box that fits a plain band may not close over a high-set solitaire, and the box that opens well for a proposal is not the one to hand over thirty times a day. This guide lists the ring boxes we hold in stock with their real sizes, then works through how to choose. All dimensions are external, length × width × height in cm, from the product pages.

Start with the ring, not the box

Two things about the ring decide which box works: the finger size and the height of the setting.

  • Finger size. A small size sits deep in the slot, a large size sits higher. Any standard single box below takes the normal retail run; where you sell many men's or wide bands, the larger singles (7.5×8×6 cm or 8×8×5 cm) give the slot room to open without bowing the pad.
  • Setting height. A cathedral or high-prong solitaire needs lid clearance. The 3.5 cm high wedding ring box suits flat bands; the 5.7 to 6.5 cm high boxes are the ones for stone-set rings. The figures are external, so the inside is smaller by the thickness of shell and lining.

If you stock only one style, make it 5.5 cm or more in height: it takes a band as well as a solitaire, and the reverse is not true.

Single, pair or proposal: three different jobs

Single ring box (everyday sales)

This is the box you go through fastest, so price per piece matters most. The wedding ring box at 6.2×5.2×3.5 cm starts from HK$12.1 and the proposal ring box at 6×5×4 cm from HK$16.0; both are low-profile boxes for bands and low settings. For stone-set rings, move up to the 5.8 cm high engagement ring box (from HK$33.9).

Pair ring box (wedding bands)

Couples buying bands together expect to see them side by side, and a pair box stops two rings rubbing on the way home. Three ranges offer a double-slot version in the same shell as the single: the velvet box (7.5×8×6 cm, three colours), the double ring box (6.5×7×5.5 cm, grey coffee or coffee) and the pair ring box (6.5×6.5×6.5 cm). Because single and double share one size, they stack together behind the counter.

Proposal and engagement box

Here the box is part of the sale and is opened once in front of someone, so lid action and colour matter more than per-piece cost. The taller, cube-shaped boxes work best: the premium suede box at 6.5×6.5×6.5 cm in carmine, black, dark green or dark blue, or the PU leather box at 6.4×6.4×6.2 cm in red, white, blue or black. Both give a high solitaire lid clearance. The premium single ring box (8×8×5 or 8.2×8.2×5.5 cm) is the roomiest single in stock and is priced accordingly, from HK$85.9. Browse the whole group under engagement and wedding ring boxes.

Magnetic, snap or drawer on a busy counter

Closure is about who opens the box and how often. A sprung snap lid opens one-handed, clicks audibly and stays shut in a handbag. A magnetic lid opens silently and feels more like a gift box, better for a seated presentation than a quick hand-over at the till. The magnetic ring box we stock is a larger PU leather case at 18.8×11×4.5 cm in black or dark green, closer to a presentation case than a pocket box, and available from a single piece. A drawer box, such as the white drawer-style ring box at 6.5×6.5×5 cm, has no lid to spring open and stacks flat, the tidiest option for shelf stock, though slower to open for a proposal.

Where the page does not state the closure, treat the first ten as your check: open and close them repeatedly and see whether the hinge loosens before ordering more.

Matching box colour to metal colour

Pick the lining for contrast with the metal, not to match the shop fit-out.

  • Yellow and rose gold read best against deep cool colours: dark green, dark blue or navy. The engagement, proposal and premium suede ranges all carry these.
  • White gold, platinum and silver can disappear against white or grey linings; carmine, China red or dark green give the stone something to stand out from.
  • Coloured stones sit easiest on neutral coffee, grey coffee or black.
  • Bridal and gift-led shops usually carry one warm colour (red, pink or orange-red) for proposals and one dark colour for everything else.

If you are also choosing tray and pad finishes, our comparison of velvet, leatherette and PU covers how each surface wears under daily handling.

How many of each to stock

Boxes are sold from ten per style. A sensible first order for a counter that sells rings daily:

  • Everyday single box: 20 to 30 pieces in your main colour, because this is the one that runs out.
  • Pair box: ten pieces, same range and colour as your single so the sets look deliberate.
  • Proposal box: ten pieces in one warm colour. It moves slowly but you should never be without one.
  • Tall box for high settings: ten pieces if your everyday box is one of the 3.5 to 4.6 cm high styles.

Reorder when any style drops below a week's sales. Our guide on packaging stock levels and reorder points covers this in more detail, and packaging that survives the walk home explains why height and closure matter after the customer leaves.

Order a sample first where you can

Colour and nap vary between batches and screens. Where a page lists a minimum of one piece, as the magnetic ring box does, order a single and check it under your own counter lighting first. For ranges sold from ten, order one style of ten, confirm lid clearance with your highest-set ring and the colour against your trays, then add the rest. Orders ship worldwide with tracking; prices are shown per piece in HKD on each product page and converted at checkout.
